While September brought cooler mornings and evenings, it also sped up the passing of time and I’m trying to do everything possible to slow down and enjoy everything that makes fall a favorite time of year for so many. My oldest son will turn 16 this month and as he races towards the freedom that a driver’s license symbolizes, I’m trying to hold on to all the small moments that I once took for granted. With that in mind, I have left the schedule for November open with the hope that I will fill the few open opportunities with the group events that some of you have been wanting. So, if you have a group of friends that you would like to bring to the farm for a cooking or crafting event, please reach out to me to schedule a time! I am also working on putting together a fall harvest celebration on either November 3 or 4th.

Around the farm, the chickens are happy little creatures that definitely prefer not to be inhibited by little things like fences. So I’m currently trying to figure out the best way to let them get plenty of free range time, but not putting them in danger from predators. They have started following me around when I’m out working, which is super cute…and I admit I’m getting attached to them.
I planted buckwheat in the parts of the garden where nothing was planted this summer, which should help to prepare that soil for spring planting. The buckwheat greens are very pretty and actually super nutritious, but unfortunately the army worms also found the buckwheat so I’m going to pass on eating it and just let it do its cover crop work. The honey bees also seem to be thrilled to have it there! The dahlias, that were gifted to me from my friend Farmer Steph in Maine, have started to bloom and are absolutely stunning when I get to them before the worms do. I’m looking forward to redesigning the garden this winter and placing them in a better position to thrive next summer.
I will be sending a survey out to this same distribution list towards the end of this week in an effort to determine the best path forward for the farm and my business plan in 2024. I would greatly appreciate it if you all took the time to give me your feedback and suggestions.
I have no recipes for you this month, but will have a few in the November newsletter that would fit beautifully into Thanksgiving week meals with family and friends.
*Heather May, the esthetician doing the Holistic Skincare Workshop, is offering a special for new clients. $125 for a 75 min facial, preceded by a skincare consult and an option for before photos.
